LGIS is WA local governments working together. We’re the provider of choice for the WA local government sector for all of their risk financing and risk management needs.
Local Government Self-Insurance Scheme
Through their Scheme WA local governments have come together to protect themselves, making sure they always have access to appropriate, affordable and sustainable protection.
JLT Public Sector, a part of Marsh & McLennan Companies (MMC), have been appointed by the WA Local Government Association (WALGA) to manage the LGISWA Local Government Self Insurance Scheme.
Unlike traditional insurance, the LGISWA Scheme is an alternative financial product, established under a Trust Deed, which allows like-minded organisations to pool together to protect their risks. The trust arrangement means that the Scheme is jointly owned by all the participating councils across WA.
Scheme membership provides protection and a range of risk services to participating local governments. We work together to manage risks and drive down claims – protecting the Scheme, containing contribution costs, and ensuring the sustainable protection of the WA local government sector.
Risk management
As the protection partner of choice for WA local governments, we understand the complexity of the sector like no other – we know that cover is only the beginning and that risk management is a cornerstone of good corporate governance and ensuring a safer workplace and community.
Since inception our services have grown to provide members with a range of risk services which meet the needs of modern local governments. We work together to manage risks and drive down claims – protecting the Scheme, containing contribution costs, and ensuring the sustainable protection of the WA local government sector.
Our strong focus on risk prevention and mitigation is what sets us apart from traditional insurance and provides for stable contributions. The range of risk management programs and services available to members as Scheme benefits include:
- Risk and governance services
- Injury management services
- Health and wellbeing program
- Human resources risk management services
- Subsidised Regional Risk Coordination program
- Subsidies for property valuations
In addition to the wide range of Scheme risk services members also have access to a broad range of additional risk services, backed by Marsh, which are tailored to specific and emerging risks within the WA local government sector.
What the LGISWA Scheme covers
Our local government members require rock solid cover to provide protection for their assets, people and organisational needs. The LGIS Scheme provides pooled protection while leveraging economies of scale under four portfolios.
- Liability: Protection against civil liability exposures;
- Property: Protection for members’ property assets, stock, plant and machinery, computers and electronic equipment and consequential loss;
- WorkCare: Workers’ compensation supports local government employees who are injured while carrying out their duties;
- Bushfire Volunteer Personal Accident: Protection for bushfire volunteers in the event that they are injured while carrying out normal bridge activities as required by legislation.
LGIS Insurance Broking (LGISIB) provides tailored, brokered cover for any risk exposures that fall outside of the four Scheme portfolios.
The benefits of ownership
Our members receive a wide range of member benefits including Scheme funded risk services, exclusive events, and dividend reimbursements when we have a surplus. These benefits set our Scheme apart from traditional insurance.
We’ve returned millions of dollars to our members since the Scheme’s inception, ensuring that our members reap the rewards of working together as a sector to finance and manage their risks.
